Owner of Fairbanks Stump Grinders Tree Service

Jon Odsather

My name is Jon Odsather, owner of Fairbanks Stump Grinders. I am a life long Fairbanks Alaskan,  I have owned & operated several profitable businesses 1981, most of which has been centered around construction and or the outdoors in the interior of Alaska.

A Bit of History

I’ve always been someone who enjoys the independence that comes with being a business owner.

  • 1981 to 1990  I roto-tilled gardens all over the Fairbanks Northstar borough to help finance my Competitive soccer habit!

  • 1990-1997 Big Jons Landscaping installed lawns, Hydro-seeding, tree work!

  • 1998-2008 Operated J&M Leasing as a driver/broker/leasor of trucks and trailers all over the state.

  • 1998 to Present Started stump grinding on the side working mainly evenings and weekends.  For years I chose to not advertise to keep the business small.

Just a Little About Us

In 2010 my son Mason became old enough to hold a shovel, so I made him my “right hand man” and #1 helper. As Fairbanks Stump Grinders grew as a business I began to further advertise to keep my son by my side and continue helping me. Fairbanks Stump Grinders has the 3 biggest-best machines in town yet still have the ability of entering a back yard through a 35″ chain-link fence gate.
We mostly use JP Carlton Stump Grinders because of their reliability and general awesomeness. I have been running the Carlton chipper since 1997. We purchased a new stump grinder in 2012 it’s powered by a 60Hp Turbocharged engine. With the year before’s demand for stump grinding as a comparison, Fairbanks Stump Grinders fully expect productivity to continue to increase with each passing year.

In addition, we also purchased a 12″ Brush Bandit for chipping brush and trees up to 12″ in Diameter. We price our jobs according to the job we don’t have a minimum and make our living on the small jobs, those under $200. We have many days during the summer when we have 8 or 9 stops with 1 or 2 stumps per job.

Community and Charitable Donations

We actively support charity and consider all offers in kind that will go to specifically help individuals or families.  We prefer to give back in this manner, over cash donations.
